The Problem 🥲

How might we help university students navigate the CLNx website and apply for job opportunities more seamlessly?

The Solution ✨

A redesigned job board and job application user flow to help users browse and apply for jobs without the hassle.

Research

Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to gather insights.
Questionnaire
A questionnaire was designed to gain a better understanding of what students currently used CLNx for, and what they value when searching through job postings.
Usability Tests
A card sorting activity was used to gain insight on the mental models of students i.e. how they organized information
Card Sorts
With the help of the Customer Success Team, interviews were conducted that consisted of retail and head office employees remotely via Zoom.
Tree Testing
Tree testing was used to ensure the proposed organization of information was intuitive to our users

Key Takeaways

1. INFORMATION OVERLOAD
Users were overwhelmed by the amount of info. shown when searching for jobs
2. HIDDEN AREAS
Website took a long period of time to navigate due to several drop-downs, information hidden, and unconventional labels
3. LENGTHY PROCESS
Participants found the process for submitting a job application lengthy and confusing

Goals

1.
Make it easier for users to find jobs that cater to them.
2.
Make the user flow of submitting a job application more efficient.
3.
Improve the organization of information in a way that doesn't overwhelm the user.

Improved User Flows

Research participants voiced out how constantly having to upload tailored resumes and cover letters and inputting unnecessary fields for each uploaded file (name and file type) was a hassle. Users had to go though multiple pop-ups to complete their application.

We made it easier by enabling users to upload all documents without the hassle.

The Final Product

Project Learnings

Be aware of the research tools you're using

I was using the free version of Optimal Workshop for my card sorting exercise, but I didn't realize that I could only see the responses of up to 5 participants and would have to pay $250 😵 to see the rest of the responses. As a result, I couldn't see the data gathered from 3 other participants and had to gather more people to do the study.

Reminder to think aloud

Some participants would naturally become quieter as they completed the usability test. As someone facilitating the test and focusing on how the participant interacts with the website, I had to remind myself to get the participant to speak more to gain a deeper understanding of their behaviour.
